Homologate nursing assistant title in Spain

The aim of this reform is to standardize the title of nursing assistant at the national level, so that the title granted in an autonomous community is used to practice the profession in any other autonomous community.

Currently, in order to work as a nursing assistant, it is necessary to have passed a medium-level training cycle of professional health training as a nursing assistant, having obtained the corresponding official title issued by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality or by the corresponding Departments of Health of the Autonomous Communities.

However, although the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality dictates the minimum teaching for the nursing assistant training cycle, each autonomous community establishes its own teaching, so that the title issued in one autonomous community is not valid in another.

How long does the nursing certification in Spain last?

Homologation of nursing in Spain is a process in which the studies carried out in the country of origin are compared with the official nursing studies in Spain. It is a long and complex process, which requires the presentation of documentation and the carrying out of tests. The approval process can take several months, and in some cases, a complementary training course may be required.

To start the approval process, it is necessary for the applicant to present a series of documents, among which are:

  • Transcript of grades issued by the home university
  • Documentation accrediting the official nursing degree
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Passport or documentation accrediting nationality

Once all the documents have been submitted, they will be evaluated. Depending on the results of this evaluation, a complementary training course or the presentation of more documentation may be requested. Once all the tests have been passed, the nursing certification will be granted.

In Spain, the title Nursing Assistant is awarded to students who have completed a three-year training program in nursing. After homologation, the Spanish Nursing Assistant title is recognized in other countries of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA).
