How long does the occupational health and safety course last?

Directive 89/391/EEC establishes the general obligation to assess risks and adopt appropriate preventive measures. In Spain, this Directive was transposed into our legal system by Royal Decree 39/1997 , of January 17, which establishes basic measures for the protection of workers against the risks derived from working conditions.

Directive 89/391/EEC obliges the company to:

  • Assess the risks to the safety and health of workers based on the nature of the work they carry out.
  • Take appropriate preventive measures.
  • Instruct and train workers in occupational health and safety.

Law 31/1995 of November 8 on the Prevention of Occupational Risks establishes the obligation of the company to train its workers in matters of safety and health at work, and provides that the Public State Employment Service (SEPE) will be the body competent to coordinate training in this matter.

The General Ordinance on Safety and Health at Work (OGSST), approved by Royal Decree 39/1997, of January 17, establishes that the course on safety and health at work must be carried out before the start of the activity and have a minimum duration of eight hours .

Training in safety and health at work must be adapted to the characteristics of the work that the worker is going to develop, as well as to his level of education and training .
