What is protocol degree?
There are different levels or degrees of protocol, which serve to establish a hierarchy of importance among those attending an event. In general, three levels can be established:
- Grand protocol: this is the highest category and is usually used at official state events, such as a visit from a head of state or the funeral of a member of the royal family.
- Diplomatic protocol: used in official events attended by representatives of other countries, such as UN or EU meetings.
- Courtesy protocol: this is the lowest level and is used in more informal events, such as company meetings or cocktail parties.
Each protocol level has a set of rules that must be followed for the event to run smoothly. For example, in the great protocol a series of rules are established for the use of the flag, for the way of addressing high-ranking people or for the order in which the attendees must sit.
